Why do plants give peace?

There is no doubt that plants can reduce stress in our lives; this might be explained by psychological, physiological, and environmental factors. This article elaborates on why plants are commonly linked with calmness and tranquility.

Through research, it has been identified that plants offer peace through psychological mechanisms, physical health, and the beauty of the surrounding environment. They meet an innate desire to be associated with the natural environment, enhance atmospheric conditions, diminish noise levels, and add beauty to the environment. Studies show the ability of plants to reduce stress and anxiety, and cultures and history affirm the use of plants to foster peace. Whether in the form of a small potted plant on the windowsill or a luxurious garden, the inclusion of plants in one’s life can greatly contribute to the improvement of one’s well-being.

Psychological Benefits:

Connection to Nature:

The idea that people are innately attracted to nature is termed biophilia and was introduced by biologist Edward O. Wilson. This need is met by plants because they represent a concrete part of nature. The presence of plants may bring comfort and the ability to relax as well as affect the quality of mental health.

Aesthetic Pleasure:

The aesthetic properties of plants in terms of their form, color, and texture can offer people aesthetic appreciation and beauty. This visual stimulation helps provide a positive message which also makes the environment peaceful. Even tasks like watering plants and trimming might also be therapeutic and a good way of relieving stress.

Physiological Benefits:

Air Quality Improvement:

One of the essential functions of plants is to purify indoor air by consuming carbon dioxide and emitting oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. It also needs to be mentioned that some of the plants are capable of removing the toxic substances from the air such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. Healthier air can make people breathe easier, which in turn can decrease stress levels and increase the feeling of well-being.

Reduction of Noise Pollution:

Effectiveness:

Plants can also be used to prevent noise pollution because they are known to attenuate sound. This is especially important in light of noise pollution which is common in most urban areas today. In this way, plants contribute to the diminishing of background noises and establish a more serene environment.

Environmental Benefits:

Creating a Calming Environment:

Plants are also used in the creation of a peaceful and beautiful environment. Green plants can alter the environment of a home, office, or public building by creating a welcoming and calming atmosphere. This part of environmental change can also positively influence mood and stress.

Fostering a Climate of Care and Concern:

Caring for plants can promote feelings of responsibility and the ability to accomplish tasks. Caring for plants entails taking them for watering, trimming, and making sure they get sunlight; the process could be very calming. This makes one overcome anxiety and depressive thoughts, hence enhancing mental stability or in other words, mental peace.

Scientific Studies and Findings:

There is now a large body of published research on the influence plants have on human health outcomes. For example, a recent study in the ‘Journal of Environmental Psychology’ observed that people exposed to natural environments or even rooms with plants feel less stressed and more happy. Another research carried out by NASA showed how some plants have the capacity to enhance air quality indoors, thus enhancing physical wellness and mental acumen.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In most societies in the course of history, plants have been linked to the themes of cure and rest. Different civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese have been known to use plants in treating ailments and have been aware of the sedative effects of plants. Gardens and open spaces are inherent in people’s lives starting from the Hanging Garden in Babylon to the famous Zen gardens in Japan associated with harmony and peace.
